In the 1980s, a breeder began producing the Silver Labrador on purpose. The genetic makeup of this coat color was very rare and no doubt nearly nonexistant, because breeders were quietly culling them out of their programs. With many years of work, the Silver Lab population began to grow. One the latest fads in the mass production of pet retrievers is the so-called silver Labrador. There are two theories about what it is. 1. The dogs are the result of adding a little Weimaraner blood to a Labrador line. (This is the most popular theory). 2. When outcrossing was allowed in the Labrador retriever, The first U.S. Kennel found to be breeding and producing Silver Labradors was investigated thoroughly by the AKC. The AKC verified that the bloodlines of the Silver Labradors were in fact a pure Labrador Retriever, and the breeder in question had no links to any other breed of dogs (specifically the Weimaraner) in his kennel. The breeders of silver Labs originally thought that the color was a mutation. Mutations typically do not reproduce and if they do they do not follow a pattern. Silver Lab expression follows the exact same pattern as any other dilution in other breeds. Whatever their origins the history of the Labrador Retriever began in the 19th century when the English aristocracy began to import the dogs from Newfoundland.
