In my role as a master paint-maker, I make oil paint by dispersing pigments in a “drying oil” such as linseed, walnut, poppy or safflower oils. Linseed oil is by far the most important and widely used drying oil. When drying oils absorb oxygen, they convert from a liquid into a hard, permanent coating. Like all paint, oil paint is made up of three indredients. Oil paint is made up of pigment, binder, and solvent. Pigment is the color and is usually a powder. The binder in oil paint is linseed oil. The solvent could a variety of things, but most often it is turpentine or mineral spirits. Another property of oil paint is its drying rate. Earth colours tend to dry the fastest, usually made from iron oxide:- Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna and Light Red. These are often applied at the beginning of a painting, their fast drying makes then good for under-painting.
