The U.S. Mint never made "pure" silver coins because 99.9 percent silver is too soft to use in circulation. Dimes, quarters and half dollars were minted with 90 percent silver content through 1964. Dimes dated after 1964 are copper-nickel clad and contain no silver. In 1922, silver was removed entirely from the five-cent coin, replacing it with a coin of roughly the same dimensions and mass as the American nickel. However, unlike the American coin, which was 75% copper and 25% nickel, the Canadian coin was pure nickel, as Canada was the world's largest producer of the metal. Just curious, why did they stop making dimes/quarters/halves out of silver in 1965? Why did they go from a penny being like 98% copper to like 98% zinc? Was it all done for cost-cutting?
